The next meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group) will be on Saturday, 10 Oct 2015, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo. This is the regular second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting. The main presentation this month at UVTAGG will be by Kory L. Meyrink on GENEALOGY WIKIS: A USER'S GUIDE.  Genealogists learn that researching one’s family history is a collaborative effort.  Other folks may have already found some branches of the family tree, while yet others may have the family Bible or other family documents.  And some relatives may live near the cemetery where ancestors are buried. Research is not a solo effort and seasoned genealogists share their tips, knowledge, and experience to help others learn about new sources and repositories. We all benefit when someone else posts information of value to our research. Wikis are one of the important, yet overlooked, ways to find such information.  Kory began his career in genealogy as a record searcher while attending Brigham Young University and has been involved in nearly all aspects of the field for over 30 years.  Kory served on the staff of the Family History Library as a reference consultant and later as the editor of the library’s publications.  He is a founding director of the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy and has written extensively, including chapters in The Library, all editions of The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy, and numerous articles and book reviews for the Genealogical Journal, Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly, Genealogical Computing, New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, and The Genealogist.  He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology, as well as his Masters of Library and Information Science, at Brigham Young University.  He is an Accredited Genealogist and a Fellow of the Utah Genealogical Association and has served as an officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists.  His areas of expertise are United States (Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and New England), and Germany.  His bio and contact information are at https://www.apgen.org/directory/search_detail.html?mbr_id=2487 and https://www.progenealogists.com/expert/kory-l-meyerink .

The main presentation this month at UVTAGG is by Peg Ivanyo on ADDING A VISUAL DIMENSION TO YOUR RESEARCH.  In spite of the technical tools available to us today, we often resort solely to the written word to analyze, plan, and summarize our research. This presentation will explore some simple tools that can help us "see" our research more clearly, and perhaps even break through a brick wall or two.  Peg Ivanyo is owner of All Things Related, which blends her former career as a meeting planner/consultant with her love of genealogy and teaching.  She serves as a ward family history consultant, as a member of the Springville Family History Center Education Committee, Assistant Director of the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), and conference administrator for the Foundation for East European Family History Studies (FEEFHS).  She earned a bachelor’s degree in merchandising and business through Utah State University, completed graduate courses in Tourism Administration at George Washington University, and has taken courses in Family History at Brigham Young University.  In addition to her membership in UGA, Peg maintains active membership with the National Genealogical Society (NGS), the International Society for British Genealogy and Family History (ISBGFH), the Leicestershire and Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS), the Czechoslovak Genealogical Society International (CGSI), and the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG).  More information about her is at https://www.apgen.org/directory/search_detail.html?mbr_id=5747 .

The main presentation this month at UVTAGG is by Sharon Monson on THE FAMILYSEARCH CATALOG:  KEY TO THE COLLECTION.  The FamilySearch Catalog is the new version of the old Family History Library Catalog which has been retired.  It now includes much more than it used to.  Locating available books, microfilms, or microfiche for a certain place or subject depends on the depth of the catalog search criteria.  Basic searches such as Place, Last Name, Title, Author, Subject and Keyword, will be demonstrated and Ms. Monson will show how you can now instantly view original records in a Historical Records search.  Thousands of books are now online and many have updated indexes and all are every-word searchable.  She will show how to filter your searches to save time and effort.  Sharon D. Monson is the founder of "GenSearch and more".  She is an author and frequent conference presenter with extensive research experience spanning 30+ years in courthouses, the Family History Library, and repositories.  Her family history presentations cover a wide range of research methods, useful tips, source document locations and unusual resources.  She specializes in the Southern US region, where burned out counties and loss of records is the norm, and has learned to dig "deeper" and polish the skills necessary to find missing documentation.  As a Residential Appraiser for most of her life, she has learned to pay attention to details.  Examining what doesn't look right, or what appears to be in the wrong place, will often yield that previously missed clue.  She feels it is extremely important to use accurate information to support family data.  As the founder of GenSearch and more, her vision is to teach younger people how to search for their families.  So that no one gets left out, she also teaches those who aren't tech savvy how to use new technology in their search for ancestors.  More information about her is available at  http://icapgen.wordpress.com/2012/10/11/sharon-d-monson/ .

The main presentation this month will be by Diane C. Loosle on DISCOVER THE FUTURE OF THE FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY AND FAMILY HISTORY CENTERS.  What does the future experience in the Family History Library and Centers look like? What are the future plans for the Family History Library and Centers? How will things change in the next few years with more records and books being available online? How do the new partnerships between FamilySearch and Ancestry, MyHeritage and DC Thomson Family History change things? What is the “discovery center” we keep hearing about? These and other questions you may have about the Family History Library and Family History Centers will be addressed.  Diane C. Loosle is the new Director of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, as well as the Family History Centers worldwide, so this will be a chance to hear what is really happening, not just rumors.  She is an Accredited Genealogist^® and a Certified Genealogist^SM  with a Bachelors degree in History from BYU with an emphasis in Family History and Genealogy and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Utah.   She has worked for FamilySearch for the past twenty years as a British Reference Consultant, British Reference Unit Supervisor, Customer Experience Manager, FamilySearch Genealogical Community Services Manager and now as Director of the Family History Library and Family History Centers worldwide. The main presentation this month will be by Jill Crandell on RESOURCES OF THE CENTER FOR FAMILY HISTORY AND GENEALOGY AT BYU.  This Center is NOT the Family History Center in the BYU Library.  It is located in the Joseph F. Smith Building on the BYU Campus and has the website  https://familyhistory.byu.edu/Pages/Home.aspx  .  It has many projects ranging from the Immigrant Ancestors Project to the Script Tutorials and from the British Marriage Index to research on the community of Nauvoo.  These resources and projects of the Center are done by faculty and students and are available online to the public at no cost.  This presentation will show you some of the resources and how they can help you with your personal research.  Jill N. Crandell, MA, AG®, is Director of the Center For Family History and Genealogy and is accredited in Midwest U.S. research.  She has taught research and technology classes at BYU for nine years and was a founding commissioner for ICAPGen, the International Commission for the Accreditation of Professional Genealogists.  She currently serves as treasurer of that organization.

In place of a main presentation for this meeting we will watch the Provo Tabernacle Temple Groundbreaking ceremony which will start at 9 am and will be broadcast to the building from downtown Provo.  Speakers will include Elder Jeffrey R. UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)

The main presentation for this meeting will be by Stephen Ehat on FIND ALL YOUR RELATIVES IN THE 1940 U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS.  The 1940 US Federal Census was released this week (2 Apr 2012) and digital images are now posted on several sites including the National Archives at http://1940census.archives.gov/ .  Several organizations are coordinating efforts to index the entire census.  These include FamilySearch Indexing and everyone is encouraged to sign up at  https://www.familysearch.org/1940census/   to help.  It will take several months to complete the entire index.  The presentation at the UVTAGG meeting this month will help people get into the census before it is indexed.  Small towns, of course, will be pretty easy; large cities will take more effort, but can still be done, as Steve Ehat will show.  Stephen Kent Ehat was born in San Francisco in 1951. Baptized a Latter-day Saint as a convert at age 10, he first attempted to do genealogical research at age 11. He knew too little, but at age 17, when he began studies at BYU, he successfully began a lifetime of family history research and discovery. He has served as a Records Examiner (Remember those?), as a Stake Extraction Director (back in the day when that opportunity first existed), and recently as the Director of a six-stake Family History Center serving Orem and Lindon. He has made a number of presentations at recent BYU Family History Conferences and at the BYU Family History Center Sunday classes and is constantly helping people with their research. He has been to Italy twice for family history research on his own Italian line that arrived in San Francisco 45 years before the earthquake and fire in 1906. He is a California attorney who lives with his wife, Jeanine, in Lindon, Utah, and they have five sons and thirteen -- now almost 14 -- grandchildren.

Following the main presentation there will be several classes about family history and technology with something for everyone at any level of expertise. The teachers and classes presently scheduled for this meeting are:  (1)   Are Your Ancestors Frozen in Time?, by Claire Brisson-Banks;  (2)  "Where Did That File Go?" - Understanding and Organizing Computer Files, by Susan Maxwell;  (3)  Analyzing Census Records, by Stephen Ehat;  (4)  Personal Help with Family History, by Don Engstrom and Finn Hansen;  (5)  Video of last month's main presentation: Increasing Productivity on FamilySearch with Sharing Time, by Andrea Schnakenburg;  (6)  Everything Mac for Genealogy, by Ron Snowden;  (7)  RootsMagic, by Rene Zamora;  (8)  Ancestral Quest, by Paul Johnson;  and  (9)  Legacy, by Joel Graham. 
                         
All meetings of the Group are open to the public whether members of the Group or not. The Group has the goal of helping individuals use technology to further their family history and there are usually 100-125 attending the monthly meetings on the second Saturdays. The officers are Gerhard Ruf, President; Laurie Castillo, 1st VP; Don Snow, 2nd VP; Liz Kennington, Newsletter Editor; Renee Zamora, Secretary; Kay Baker, Gerry Eliason, Don Engstrom, and Rayanne Melick working with finances and membership; and Bruce Merrill and Marie Andersen working with the DVD Library. UTAH VALLEY TECHNOLOGY AND GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING (UVTAGG)

The next regular, second-Saturday-of-the-month meeting of the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group - UVTAGG (Formerly the Utah Valley PAF Users Group - UVPAFUG) will be on Saturday, 9 Jul 2011, from 9 am to noon in the LDS "Red Chapel", 4050 North Timpview Drive (650 East), Provo. With the organization's name change, these URL's will also be changed eventually.

The main presentation for this meeting will be by David E. Rencher on FAMILYSEARCH PRODUCTS AND FEATURES. FamilySearch continues to make a wide variety of products and services available to genealogists throughout the world. This presentation highlights the many uses of these new products from the view of the Chief Genealogical Officer at FamilySearch. David E. Rencher, AG, CG, FIGRS, FUGA, is employed by the Family History Department in Salt Lake City as the Chief Genealogical Officer for FamilySearch. A professional genealogist since 1977, he is an Accredited GenealogistCM with ICAPGenSM in Ireland research and a Certified GenealogistSM with the Board for Certification of Genealogists®. He is the Irish course coordinator and instructor for the Samford University Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR) in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1980 with a BA in Family and Local History. He is a past-president of the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) 1997-2000, a national genealogical society umbrella organization, a past-president of the Utah Genealogical Association (UGA) 1993-1995 and a Fellow of that organization. He is a fellow of the Irish Genealogical Research Society, London and is a vice-president of the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU). He is currently serving as the Chair of the joint Federation of Genealogical Societies and National Genealogical Society committee for Record Preservation and Access and serves as the Secretary for the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and as trustee for the Umpstead, Jr. and Elizabeth Jemima Philpott Rencher and the Winslow Farr, Sr. Family Organizations. The Utah Valley PAF Users Group has recently changed it's name to the Utah Valley Technology and Genealogy Group. This name now reflects the group's intentions more succinctly, namely using technology and doing family history. The old name came from the time when the PAF program was the most widely used software program for recording genealogy. The early focus of the group was to assist others in learning how to use the evolving features in PAF (Personal Ancestral File) more effectively. Now there are multiple software programs to choose from and technology continues to march forward, aiding us greatly in our family history endeavors. Hopefully the name change will help our community and others to understand a little more of what this group does...family history with the help of technology!


The next UVTAGG meeting is this coming Saturday, 11 June 2011 from 9:00 am to 12 noon at "The Red Brick LDS Chapel,"  4050 North 650 East, Provo, Utah.
